PRAGUE CASTLE (PRAHA HRAD) in the Hradcany Area
The Prague Castle complex of buildings towers over the Hradcany Area. Walk around the courtyards, admire the churches and major buildings. The Castle itself is now the residence of the Czech Republic President.

For your first view of the Castle go in through the Matthias Gate – the uniforms of the guards were designed as a result of the film Amadeus and there is a formal Changing of the Guard.

As you walk around, don’t forget to look across the river at Vysehrad, the sister castle on the other side of the River above the Old Town. By the way when you visit Vysehrad, you must look at the amazing doors at the Church of St Peter and St Paul.

Leave plenty of time to tour Prague Castle complex – it’s not just a single building but a collection of magnificent buildings, churches, courtyards, and cottages. Take a stroll down Golden Lane, a narrow street lined by unexpected small cottages.

 

The beautiful St Vitus Cathedral is undergoing extensive restoration but do go inside and look at the awe arches and the colourful stained glass windows.

Go down the Romanesque Castle Steps towards the Lesser Quarter but keep looking back as you approach Charles Bridge to appreciate the true beauty of the Castle and adjoining buildings.
